Ironix Therapeutics: a Breakthrough in Biotechnology.

With years of experience working in molecular biology, professor Tom Vanden Berghe has become one of the leading voices in cell death research. To bring his expertise from academia to the market is a challenge of a different kind. As co-founder of Ironix Therapeutics, Tom brings his groundbreaking research forward, to make a positive societal change.

Our bodies are constantly changing. Its cells renew themselves in just a couple of months. Cell death is just as significant a process in your body.  The coming and going of cells make sure that your body is functioning the way it should. But when there’s an overload of cell death, it often leads to a range of illnesses.

The blood in our body is full of iron. What if that means that our body rusts too? Tom Vanden Berghe leads new research in this field and links biological rust to a new kind of cell death that causes multi-organ failure, amongst many other complications. His team is the first in the world to conduct this kind of research and develop a specific anti-rust medicine.

The potent medicine can be used in many different places in the health sector. Some of its significant applications include using the drug to optimize conditions for organ transplantation and to go against organ failure at intensive care institutions, but there’s many more significant places Vanden Berghe is hoping to take the drug and scientific research towards.

Although there’s constant challenges to face, Vanden Berghe truly believes that individuals can have an important part to play in society. His message to students is to “keep going! Don’t underestimate your own capabilities. You can do more than you might believe.”
