It’s a major topic in Europe: our transport has to be better and greener. It’s called 30% by 2030: the European rail freight sector wants to obtain a 30% rail modal share by 2030. All around Europe there’s new strategies to get to this number. In Belgium, we are hopelessly trailing behind. Kristof Oeyen and the entire TEX Team are trying to make positive impact.
Whether you’ve heard about recent rail strikes on the news, or you’ve attempted to enter the Antwerp Ring Road, we’ve all had our issues with Belgium’s transport system. Whilst some of the main roads through our small country are blocked up with traffic jams, our rail modal share remains at only 12%. How will we triple this amount, and solve multiple issues at once at the same time?
It is a burning question, yet government support is not yet fully available. Kristof has decades of experience working in the freight railway sector and decided to take matters into his own hands. Backed by TEX Holding, a specialized Swiss railway company, Kristof has put TEX Rail Training on the map. The team of TEX Rail Training prepares new talent for the freight railway industry. More and more professions end up on the occupation shortage list today in Flanders. Kristof mentions we’ll need thousands of people in the workforce to make operations run according to plan. From train driver to the lesser known wagon inspector, across the board new people are needed to fill in important functions. TEX Rail Training offers the needed courses, and continues to lobby for a railway system that will be paramount to hitting Belgium’s climate targets by 2030.
Kristof’s message goes out specifically to students in STEM courses today: “Consider rail as a career!” It will be hands on deck from here on out.
